About the exhibition

<html><body><p>Artist Claudy Jongstra is recognised around the world for her plant-dyeing expertise. She uses nature&rsquo;s colour palette in her distinctive felted woollen installations and tapestries. Specially for this exhibition, Jongstra developed her first-ever woven work in the TextielLab. The work was inspired by a 2,800-year-old fabric recently found in an Iron Age grave in Uden-Slabroekse Heide (Noord-Brabant). Scientists discovered a pied-de-poule pattern in the fabric, which was once dyed blue and red. The intricate check, the dyes used to produce it and the textile&rsquo;s decay over time all come together in Jongstra&rsquo;s latest tapestry.</p></body></html>

<html><body><p>A special addition to the exhibition is the Dye Plant Garden, which garden designer Maaike Bertens and artist Nan Groot Antink planted with local residents in the museum&rsquo;s forecourt. The garden is the starting point for a new work by Groot Antink called &lsquo;From aster to sorrel: dye plants &amp; stories&rsquo;, which she co-created with the residents. The work will &lsquo;grow&rsquo; inside the museum during the exhibition as new elements are added. <html><body><p>Indigo is a natural pigment that can produce different shades of blue in textiles. It has a long history that connects people and places around the world. The dye was once considered extremely valuable, including for its great spiritual power. It was also a precious commodity grown by slaves on plantations in the American colonies.</p>
<p>Artists Antonio Jos&eacute; Guzman and Iva Jankovic explore the colonial history of indigo in a monumental installation of indigo canvases commissioned by the TextielMuseum. The fabrics were embroidered in the TextielLab with symbols from traditional African texts and alphabets, giving new visibility to the African culture that was suppressed by European colonists. The installation was created in collaboration with indigo master Sufiyan Khatri and the experts from the TextielLab.</p></body></html>

Over de tentoonstelling

<html><body><p>Kunstenaar Claudy Jongstra staat wereldwijd bekend om haar expertise in het verven met planten. Ze gebruikt het kleurenpalet van de natuur in haar typerende installaties en wandkleden gemaakt van gevilte wol. Speciaal voor &lsquo;Kleurstof&rsquo; ging Jongstra aan de slag in het TextielLab, waar ze haar allereerste geweven kunstwerk maakte. Het werk is ge&iuml;nspireerd op een bijzondere archeologische vondst: een stukje textiel van maar liefst 2.800 jaar oud dat onlangs gevonden werd in de Uden-Slabroekse Heide. Wetenschappers ontdekten een pied-de-poule patroon in het stukje stof dat ooit geverfd was in de kleuren blauw en rood. Zowel het patroon van deze archeologische vondst, als de kleurstoffen waar het ooit mee geverfd werd en het verval dat in de loop der jaren is ontstaan zijn verwerkt in een nieuw wandkleed.</p></body></html>

En wist je dat het mooiste rood gemaakt wordt van schildluizen? Niet alleen textiel, maar ook roze koeken krijgen hun kleur door dit kleine beestje. <html><body><p>Ter gelegenheid van &lsquo;Kleurstof&rsquo; heeft het TextielMuseum een Verfplantentuin aangelegd in samenwerking met buurtbewoners, tuinontwerper Maaike Bertens en kunstenaar Nan Groot Antink. De Verfplantentuin vormt het startpunt voor een nieuw werk van Nan Groot Antink genaamd &lsquo;Van aster tot zuring: verfplanten &amp; verhalen&rsquo; dat ze samen met de buurtbewoners maakt. Gedurende de tentoonstelling zal het werk in de expositieruimte groeien. <html><body><p>Indigo is een natuurlijk pigment dat gebruikt kan worden om textiel in verschillende tinten blauw te verven. Het heeft een rijke historie die diverse culturen en delen van de wereld met elkaar verbindt. Kunstenaars Antonio Jos&eacute; Guzman en Iva Jankovic onderzoeken de koloniale geschiedenis van indigo. De kleurstof werd vroeger als erg waardevol gezien en werd bijvoorbeeld gebruikt bij spirituele tradities. Daarnaast was het een kostbare grondstof die door tot slaaf gemaakten verbouwd werd op plantages in het gekoloniseerde Amerika.</p>
<p>In opdracht van het museum verwerkten Guzman en Jankovic de inzichten van hun onderzoek in een monumentale installatie van indigo doeken. De doeken zijn in het TextielLab geborduurd met symbolen uit traditionele Afrikaanse geschriften en alfabetten, om opnieuw zichtbaarheid te geven aan de Afrikaanse cultuur die door de Europese kolonisatie werd onderdrukt. De installatie kwam tot stand in samenwerking met indigomeester Sufiyan Khatri en de experts van het TextielLab.</p></body></html>

<html><body><p>In &lsquo;COLOUR &amp; ABSTRACTION | Generations in Dialogue&rsquo;, the TextielMuseum presents a broad spectrum of abstract textile works from the 1960s to the present. Spanning more than half a century, the works bring two generations of artists and designers into dialogue with each other. The exhibition features pieces by both the older generation, which explores colour and abstraction through the medium of textile, and the younger generation, which is interested in colour and abstraction as a subject. Films, sketches and samples illustrating the creative process are also included. On display for the first time are works by Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal and Formafantasma, which were commissioned by the TextielMuseum.</p>

<p>The Dutch-Brazilian artist Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal (*1980), who lives in New York, has made a name for himself as an internet artist specialising in colour and light. In &lsquo;Abstract Browsing&rsquo; (2017), he transformed the web into a hallucinatory collage of squares and stripes in bright red, pink, light blue, turquoise and lemon yellow. To generate the vivid colours and dimensions he wanted, he worked with technicians in the TextielLab to produce a five-metre-wide woven tapestry. His approach makes him the natural heir to Peter Struycken (*1939), the Dutch master of colour experimentation.</p>
<p>Struycken&rsquo;s fabrics exude dynamism and musicality. As early as 1969, he used the computer to generate his art. In the TextielLab, he was one of the first artists to explore systemically the colour possibilities of computer-aided weaving.</p>

<p>Colours evoke moods, without us being aware of them at the moment of observation. Even blind people can be affected by colour, their heart rate increasing when they enter a red room. Visual artists use colours for formal and personal reasons, to express an emotion or spiritual experience or to communicate with the viewer. Struycken, Ria van Eyk and Lam de Wolf, all born between 1939 and 1955, belong to the older generation of artists who explore colour and abstraction through the medium of textile. The younger generation, which is interested in colour and abstraction as a subject, is represented by artists such as Reinoud van Vught and Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal as well as designers such as Bertjan Pot and the Eindhoven duo Raw Color. In contrast to Struycken and Rozendaal, Van Vught (*1960) uses a muted palette and more traditional techniques. His poetic tapestries in subtle, natural tones have their roots in a series of large-scale drawings in which he experiments with paint and water.</p>
<h3>Three-dimensionality in textiles</h3>
<p>Textiles were for a long time synonymous with the two-dimensionality of tapestries. The emancipation of textiles as a medium in the visual arts from the 1960s opened up new creative possibilities. Three-dimensional textile works and installations were created &ndash; woven sculptures, fabrics dipped in latex and experiments with synthetic yarns, metal wire, sisal and hemp &ndash; resulting in an unusual, visual and physical experience. In the Netherlands, D&eacute;sir&eacute;e Scholten-van de Rivi&egrave;re and Loes van der Horst, Harry Boom, Lam de Wolf and Marjan Bijlenga were the first to explore the structural possibilities of textiles.</p>

<p>Today&rsquo;s textile artists are continuing what they started. Besides traditional techniques, they are utilising the developments in computer technology to produce complex textile structures. &lsquo;High Twist Wool / Silver Ellipse&rsquo; (2016), a weaving by the Berlin-based artist Ursula Wagner, is a good example of this. Her elegant drapery is composed of multiple layers and takes on a three-dimensional form through a clever interplay of yarns and bindings. The Italian design duo Formafantasma meticulously studied the components of light &ndash; reflection, shadow, colour and space &ndash; and the use of optics, mirrors and glass to shape it. Behind the artistry of a series of minimal light objects lies a high-tech, function.</p></body></html>


<html><body><p>Laat je vanaf 17 maart 2018 in het TextielMuseum verwonderen door een breed spectrum aan abstracte textiele werken vanaf de jaren 1960 tot nu, in de expositie &lsquo;KLEUR &amp; ABSTRACTIE | Generaties in Dialoog&rsquo;. Twee generaties kunstenaars en vormgevers treden met hun werken in een dialoog. Er wordt zowel werk getoond van de oudere generatie kunstenaars die het thema kleur en abstractie in het medium textiel verkent, als ook werk van de jongere generatie die ge&iuml;nteresseerd is in het onderwerp. In enkele films, middels schetsen en stalen wordt ook het maakproces van een aantal kunstenaars belicht. Een primeur zijn de werken van Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal en Formafantasma, ontstaan in opdracht van het TextielMuseum.</p>

<p>Vierkanten en strepen in helderrood, roze, lichtblauw, turquoise en citroengeel voegen zich tot een immense, kleurrijke blokkendoos. De Nederlands-Braziliaanse kunstenaar Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal (*1980) cre&euml;ert een hallucinerende kleurervaring met zijn vijf meter brede, geweven wandwerk &lsquo;Abstract Browsing&rsquo; (2017). Rozendaal, woonachtig in New York, heeft in korte tijd naam gemaakt als internetkunstenaar gespecialiseerd in kleur en licht.</p>
<p>Sinds enkele jaren transformeert hij computerbeelden in het TextielLab tot felgekleurde geweven doeken. Hij treedt daarmee in de voetsporen van de Nederlandse meester van het kleurexperiment Peter Struycken (*1939). Zijn doeken ademen dynamiek en muzikaliteit. Al in 1969 gebruikt Struycken de computer voor het genereren van zijn kunst. In het TextielLab is hij een van de eerste kunstenaars die zich systematisch verdiept in de kleurmogelijkheden van computer-vervaardigde weefsels.</p>

Beeldend kunstenaars gebruiken kleuren om formele en persoonlijke redenen, om uitdrukking te geven aan een emotie of een spirituele ervaring of om met de kijker te communiceren. Peter Struycken, Ria van Eyk en Lam de Wolf, geboren tussen 1939 &ndash; 1955, behoren tot de oudere generatie van kunstenaars die het thema kleur en abstractie in het medium textiel verkent. De jongere generatie die is ge&iuml;nteresseerd in het onderwerp kleur en abstractie wordt vertegenwoordigd door kunstenaars als Reinoud van Vught en Rafa&euml;l Rozendaal maar ook vormgevers als Bertjan Pot en het Eindhovense duo Raw Color. Reinoud van Vught (*1960) hanteert vergeleken met Struycken en Rozendaal een zacht kleurpalet en een meer ambachtelijke werkwijze. Zijn po&euml;tische wandkleden in subtiele natuurlijke tinten vinden hun oorsprong in een serie grote tekeningen waarin hij experimenteert met verf en water.</p>
<h3>Driedimensionaliteit in textiel</h3>
<p>Textiel in de kunst stond lange tijd synoniem voor het tweedimensionale vlak van wandkleden. De emancipatie van textiel als medium in de beeldende kunst vanaf de jaren 1960 brengt daar verandering in. Er ontstaan driedimensionale textiele werken en installaties: geweven sculpturen, doeken in latex gedompeld en materiaalexperimenten met synthetische garens, metaaldraad, sisal en hennep. De keuze voor textiel zorgt voor een bijzondere, visuele en fysieke ervaring. D&eacute;sir&eacute;e Scholten-van de Rivi&egrave;re en Loes van der Horst, maar ook Harry Boom, Lam de Wolf en Marjan Bijlenga zijn Nederlandse pioniers in het verkennen van de vormende mogelijkheden van textiel.</p>

<p>Vandaag de dag pakt een jongere generatie de draad op. Naast ambachtelijke technieken gebruiken zij de computer om complexe textiele structuren te cre&euml;ren. &lsquo;High Twist Wool / Silver Ellipse&rsquo; (2016), een weefsel van de Berlijnse kunstenaar Ursula Wagner, is er een goed voorbeeld van. Haar elegante draperie is opgebouwd uit meerdere lagen en neemt een driedimensionale vorm aan door een slim samenspel van garens en bindingen. Het Italiaanse ontwerpersduo Formafantasma deed onderzoek naar de toepassingen van licht met betrekking tot reflectie, schaduw, kleur en ruimte. Door het gebruik van spiegels en andere optische instrumenten ontstaan interessante visuele effecten. Achter het artistieke uiterlijk van de serie minimale lichtobjecten zit een high-tech, functionele benadering tot design verscholen.</p></body></html>


<html><body><p>By using the four themes, &lsquo;Honouring Origins&rsquo;, &lsquo;Collecting Ingredients&rsquo;, &lsquo;Reinventing Materials&rsquo; and &lsquo;Sustaining Production&rsquo;, the exhibition &lsquo;EARTH MATTERS&rsquo;, gives the visitor a better understanding of a sustainable cycle and the importance of material studies. The exhibition shows experiments &ndash; from fashion to design &ndash; that contribute to a sustainable making process, either on a small or a large scale. All projects encourage people to think about the source of materials and the creation process, not only through innovation, but even more by the re-evaluation of crafts and locally produced products. The exhibition is curated by Lidewij Edelkoort and Philip Fimmano, together with the TextielMuseum.</p>
<h3>&ldquo;This young century has brought about a moment of reflection and radical change, making up for a century of ecological abuse, consumption, greed and violence. <p>EARTH MATTERS is an expansive survey of new works, looking at innovative design objects, garments, textiles, yarns and materials. More than 40 international designers, artists and manufacturers transverse the 4 exhibition themes:</p>
<h3>HONOURING ORIGINS</h3>
<p>The origins of a fibre, the name of the weaver and the face of the artisan each become intrinsic to understanding an object&rsquo;s identity and soul. Like knowing the source of our food, materials are explored by designers interested in the unique aspects of the animal or plant species. A new generation of designers retrace their roots and research their history, sometimes going back to the beginning of time.</p>

<p>Like foragers looking for food, ecologically-conscious designers hunt and gather organic ingredients, creating a colourful language tinted for today&rsquo;s greener times. They show us how manufacturing can avoid excessive pollution. Several investigate the properties of individual plants, like contemporary botanists cataloguing their qualities, reconnecting society to nature. Environmentalism is interwoven with sustenance, particularly when it comes to the oceans.</p>

<p>Material is the message in today&rsquo;s design world, with designers looking at both low and high tech ways to reinvent the elements with which they work, all the while staying connected to the Earth. Recomposed from scraps of matter or reinvented with both natural and synthetic ingredients. Recycled and reincarnated, cultured and cultivated, to give new life to texture, fibre and colour.</p>

<p>Designers aim for a more sustainable production process and make us aware of the polluting ways we make textiles today. They seek to use little to no chemicals and water, work as energy-efficient as possible and manufacture locally, often experimenting with recycled or upcycled materials. They also revive cottage industry techniques and return to old looms to establish innovative studios.</p>

<html><body><p>Aan de hand van de vier thema&rsquo;s &lsquo;Stil staan bij de oorsprong&rsquo;, &lsquo;Ingredi&euml;nten verzamelen&rsquo;, &lsquo;Materialen heruitvinden&rsquo; en &lsquo;Duurzame productie&rsquo; krijgt de bezoeker een beter begrip van de duurzame cyclus en materiaalstudies. De tentoonstelling toont experimenten &ndash; van mode tot design &ndash; die bijdragen aan een duurzamer productieproces, zowel op kleine als op grote schaal. Alle projecten zetten aan tot nadenken over de oorsprong van materiaal en het makersproces, niet alleen door middel van innovatie, maar vooral door de herontdekking en -waardering van ambachten en lokaal geproduceerde producten. De tentoonstelling is samengesteld door Lidewij Edelkoort en Philip Fimmano, in samenwerking met het TextielMuseum.</p>
<h3>&ldquo;We staan aan het begin van een eeuw van reflectie en radicale verandering. De ecologische misstanden, overconsumptie, hebzucht en het geweld van de vorige eeuw moeten worden gecompenseerd. Voor het eerst ontstaat een post-fossiele maatschappij, waarin het gebruik van natuurlijke ingredi&euml;nten en alternatieve energiebronnen ons hoop biedt voor de toekomst .&rdquo;</h3>

<p>EARTH MATTERS is een uitgebreid onderzoek naar nieuw werk op het gebied van innovatief design, textiel, garens en materiaal. Meer dan 40 internationale designers, kunstenaars en producenten verbinden de volgende 4 tentoonstellingsthema&rsquo;s:</p>
<h3>STIL STAAN BIJ DE OORSPRONG</h3>
<p>De herkomst van een vezel, de naam van de maker en het gezicht achter de fabrieksarbeider zijn van wezenlijk belang om de identiteit van een object te begrijpen en de ziel ervan te onthullen. Zoals mensen steeds vaker willen weten waar hun eten vandaag komt, zo onderzoeken designers meer en meer de unieke aspecten van dieren en planten. Een nieuwe generatie designers verdiept zicht in de roots en de rijke historie van de aarde en gaat soms zelfs terug naar het begin der tijden.</p>

<h3>Ingredienten verzamelen</h3>
<p>Zoals jagers-verzamelaars op zoek waren naar eten, zo jagen ecologisch-bewuste ontwerpers op organische ingredi&euml;nten. Ze cre&euml;ren een kleurrijke taal, geschikt voor groenere tijden. Ze laten ons zien hoe het maakproces van producten excessieve vervuiling kan tegengaan. Een aantal van hen onderzoekt de eigenschappen van planten. Hedendaagse plantkundigen catalogiseren deze eigenschappen en verbinden de maatschappij en natuur opnieuw met elkaar. Milieuvriendelijkheid en levensonderhoud zijn verweven, zeker als het de oceaan betreft.</p>

<h3>Materialen heruitvinden</h3>
<p>Materiaal is d&eacute; boodschap in de hedendaagse ontwerpwereld. Ontwerpers zoeken zowel high- als lowtech manieren om de elementen waarmee ze werken te herontdekken en tegelijkertijd verbonden te blijven met de aarde. Samengesteld uit afval, of opnieuw gevormd door natuurlijke en synthetische ingredi&euml;nten. Gerecycled en gere&iuml;ncarneerd om textuur en kleur nieuw leven in te blazen.</p>

<h3>Duurzame productie</h3>
<p>Designers streven naar een duurzamer productieproces; ze maken ons bewust van de vervuilende manier waarop textiel vandaag de dag wordt gemaakt. Zo min mogelijk gebruik van water en chemicali&euml;n, effici&euml;nt omgaan met energie en lokaal produceren zijn hun uitgangspunten. Gerecycled en upcycled materiaal staan centraal, de huisnijverheid wordt nieuw leven ingeblazen en oude technieken worden gebruikt om innovatieve bedrijfjes op te richten.</p>

<h3>Vandaag de dag zien we dat steeds meer kunstenaars en ontwerpers onderzoeken hoe duurzaamheid en schoonheid gecombineerd kunnen worden. Men gaat op zoek naar verfijning en esthetiek. Het TextielMuseum heeft alle ingredi&euml;nten in huis om &ndash; bezoekers en gebruikers &ndash; kennis te laten maken met de basisprincipes van het &lsquo;maken 2.0&rsquo;: personaliseren, duurzaamheid en de nieuwste technieken.&rdquo;</h3>

<p>Lidewij Edelkoort is een van &rsquo;s werelds meest bekende trend forecasters; zij is tevens curator, publicist en educator. Samen met co-curator Philip Fimmano maakt Edelkoort Exhibitions dynamische design tentoonstellingen voor internationale musea en instellingen.</p>

<html><body><p>Commissioned by Gallery Libby Sellers, Studio Formafantasma explored the potential of lava as a raw material and a sustainable alternative to carbon fibre. Lavic fibre was combined with cotton to weave two tapestries.</p></body></html>


<html><body><p>Inspired by the eruption of Mount Etna on 20 November 2013, Studio Formafantasma investigated this fiery Sicilian phenomenon, where the landscape and forces of nature collide. The tapestries, woven from lavic fibre, show the ancient Greek gods of Mount Etna, Hephaestus and Athena, emerging from the rock. Normally only used in high-tech applications, lavic fibre is put in the spotlight by placing it in a traditional, artistic context, with clear references to its origins.<br><br>Basalt yarns, which are smooth and can be compared to fibreglass, were used for the first time for this project. Combining the basalt yarns with white cotton ensures the colour and material stand out.</p></body></html>


<html><body><p>In opdracht van Gallery Libby Sellers onderzocht Studio Formafantasma de mogelijkheden van lava als een grondstof en een duurzaam alternatief voor koolstofvezel. Lavavezels werden gecombineerd met katoen om twee wandtapijten te weven. <br><br>Ge&iuml;nspireerd door de uitbarsting van de Etna op 20 november 2013 verdiepte Studio Formafantasma zich in dit vurige Siciliaanse fenomeen, waar het landschap en de krachten van de natuur samenkomen. De wandtapijten, geweven van lavavezels, tonen de oude Griekse goden van de Etna, Hephaistos en Athena, die uit de rots tevoorschijn komen.&nbsp;</p></body></html>


<html><body><p>Lavavezels, die normaal gesproken alleen in hightech toepassingen worden gebruikt, krijgen hier een prominente rol door ze in een traditionele, artistieke context te plaatsen, met duidelijke verwijzingen naar hun oorsprong. Voor dit project werden voor het eerst basaltgarens gebruikt, die glad zijn en te vergelijken met glasvezel. Door de basaltgarens te combineren met wit katoen komen zowel de kleur als het materiaal optimaal tot hun recht.</p></body></html>
