Aiko Tezuka

Introduction.
Aiko Tezuka is a contemporary artist based in Berlin, Germany, whose practice spans Berlin and Tokyo. She received her master’s degree in painting from Musashino Art University in 2001, where she studied under sculptor Toya Shigeo. In 2005, she completed a PhD in painting at Kyoto City University of Arts, under the supervision of painter Usami Keiji.
Since 1997, Tezuka has developed a distinctive artistic practice centred on deconstructing and unravelling readymade textiles. Through this meticulous process, she reconfigures existing materials and creates new structural forms that explore the relationship between memory, history and materiality. Her work often engages with historical objects, which she transforms using her own distinctive methods.
From 2010 to 2011, Tezuka lived and worked in London with support from the Gotoh Memorial Cultural Foundation. In 2011, she moved to Berlin through a fellowship from the Japanese Government’s Overseas Study Program for Artists, where she continues to live and work today.
