Damien Ajavon

Introduction.
Damien Ajavon is a textile artist born in Paris who lives and works in Norway, between Noresund and Oslo. Their practice explores how textiles can carry personal stories and connect cultures, generations and communities. Drawing on their own heritage, African and Western cultures, and queer communities, Ajavon creates textile compositions that explore identity, memory and belonging.
Ajavon combines traditional textile techniques with an experimental approach to materials, structure and texture. By manipulating fibres and bringing together different techniques and materials, they create layered works in which the tactile and visual qualities of textiles play a central role. Their practice brings traditions of African craftsmanship into dialogue with diasporic and transoceanic perspectives, making space for stories that transcend cultural and generational boundaries.
Ajavon graduated with a master’s degree in Textile from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts in 2023. Their work has been exhibited internationally, including in Norway, Sweden, France and the United States. In 2025, they presented solo exhibitions at Kunsthall Oslo, the Hannah Ryggen Triennale and cc-tapis. Their work is held in several public art collections, including those of the City of Oslo and the TextielMuseum in Tilburg.
