<html><body>In his experimental R&amp;D project at TextielLab, Elmo Mistiaen explored the boundaries between artificial intelligence, fashion and natural evolution. Together with product developer Sarena Huizinga, he transformed his digital AI designs from insect-inspired body pieces to physical, three-dimensional textile sculptures.
From his fascination with insects as almost alien creatures, he used AI to enlarge and reshape microscopic organic forms. At the TextielLab, he experimented with flat-knitting machines to make his digital concepts tangible, exploring the symbiosis between human body form and natural biomorphic structures.
SHAPE
The project resulted in a voluminous sculptural body piece exhibited in &lsquo;SHAPE - body, fashion, identity&rsquo; at the TextielMuseum. The creation explores an alternative evolutionary world, with knitted elements reminiscent of eggs and larvae, created with locally grown wool and experimental materials such as protein-based yarns. Mistiaen takes a unique philosophical approach that sees AI as a creative partner in the design process - not as a threat, but as an extension of artistic imagination. By transforming proprietary imagery, he creates a dynamic collaboration between artist and artificial intelligence.

<html><body>In zijn experimentele R&amp;D-project bij het TextielLab verkende Elmo Mistiaen de grenzen tussen kunstmatige intelligentie, mode en natuurlijke evolutie. Samen met productontwikkelaar Sarena Huizinga transformeerde hij zijn digitale AI-ontwerpen van insect-ge&iuml;nspireerde lichaamsstukken naar fysieke, driedimensionale textiele sculpturen.
Vanuit zijn fascinatie voor insecten als bijna buitenaardse wezens gebruikte hij AI om microscopische organische vormen te vergroten en te hervormen. De creatie verkent een alternatieve evolutionaire wereld, met gebreide elementen die doen denken aan eitjes en larven, gecre&euml;erd met lokaal geteelde wol en experimentele materialen zoals prote&iuml;ne-gebaseerde garens. Mistiaen hanteert een unieke filosofische benadering waarbij AI wordt gezien als een creatieve partner in het ontwerpproces - niet als bedreiging, maar als uitbreidingsmogelijkheid van artistieke verbeelding. Door eigen beeldmateriaal te transformeren cre&euml;ert hij een dynamische samenwerking tussen kunstenaar en kunstmatige intelligentie.</body></html>
