Artists from all over the world come to the TextielLab, the TextielMuseum&rsquo;s professional workshop, to research and experiment. Textile now displays previously unseen work by both well-known names and young talent.&nbsp; They use the unique expressiveness of textiles to draw attention to current themes like identity, diversity, sexuality, gender, environment and decolonisation, and sometimes actively involve you as an audience.

About the exhibition

<html><body>In the exhibition, you will also find the result of the second edition of project Bindweefsel. Fifteen women from different cultures created an art piece titled Coat of Many Colors together with artist Theodorus Johannes. Each of the participants worked on their own part of the caftan-like coat in the TextielLab and they used various passement techniques. The beautiful, multicoloured coat unites all their stories and creativity. The group found their inspiration in fashion as an expression of identity and in the Dolly Parton song of the same name.</body></html>

Kunstenaars van over de hele wereld komen naar het TextielLab, de professionele werkplaats van het TextielMuseum, om te onderzoeken en experimenteren. Over de tentoonstelling

<html><body>In de tentoonstelling vind je ook het resultaat van de tweede editie van het project&nbsp;<a href="/nieuws/bindweefsel-2/">Bindweefsel</a>. Vijftien vrouwen uit verschillende culturen maakten samen met kunstenaar Theodorus Johannes een kunstwerk getiteld&nbsp;Coat of Many Colors.&nbsp;De deelnemers werkten in het TextielLab ieder aan een deel van de kaftanachtige jas en gebruikten hiervoor verschillende passement technieken. Het is een prachtige, bonte jas geworden, waarin hun verhalen en creativiteit zich verenigen. De groep liet zich inspireren door mode als uitdrukking van identiteit en door het gelijknamige nummer van Dolly Parton.</body></html>

<html><body>Karo Akpokiere's graphic illustrations are well suited to conversion to jacquard fabrics. &lsquo;High-Life Generator Orchestra&rsquo; is from the &lsquo;Lagos Drawings&rsquo; series, which is inspired by the pop culture of Lagos, Nigeria. In &lsquo;Lagos Drawings&rsquo;, Akpokiere considered how the language of graphic design, advertising and religion in Lagos can be used to comment on contemporary realities in the city. Specifically, &lsquo;High-Life Generator Orchestra&rsquo; offers a satirical take on the heavy use of petrol and diesel generators as a primary source of electricity and the noise and air pollution they generate.</body></html>

<html><body>The highly collaborative process started with Akpokiere sharing the backstory of the artwork with product developer Lotte van Dijk. Together, they explored the best way to amplify the work&rsquo;s narrative, choosing the most appropriate yarns, weaves and colours for each section. It was much like tearing down a building, being confronted with its core (the foundation) and then building it back up with new materials. Part of the process that stood out for Akpokiere was discovering how to create an illusion of colour by combining different yarns. For this project, a mix of synthetic and natural yarns were selected. In some areas, texture was created using historic weaves from Tilburg&rsquo;s former Textile School, giving the conductor&rsquo;s suit an interesting pattern and enhancing the billowing exhaust fumes.</body></html>

<html><body>Karo Akpokiere's grafische illustraties lenen zich uitstekend voor omzetting naar jacquardstoffen. High-Life Generator Orchestra maakt deel uit van de serie Lagos Drawings, die ge&iuml;nspireerd is door de popcultuur van Lagos, Nigeria.
In Lagos Drawings onderzoekt Akpokiere hoe de taal van grafisch ontwerp, reclame en religie in Lagos kan worden gebruikt om commentaar te geven op hedendaagse realiteiten in de stad. Specifiek biedt High-Life Generator Orchestra een satirische kijk op het intensieve gebruik van benzine- en dieselgeneratoren als primaire stroomvoorziening en de geluidsoverlast en luchtvervuiling die ze veroorzaken.

<html><body>Het sterk samenwerkingsgerichte proces begon met Akpokiere, die de achtergrond van het kunstwerk deelde met productontwikkelaar Lotte van Dijk. Samen onderzochten ze hoe het narratief van het werk het best kon worden versterkt, waarbij ze zorgvuldig de meest geschikte garens, weeftechnieken en kleuren voor elke sectie kozen. Dit proces leek op het slopen van een gebouw, waarbij men geconfronteerd wordt met de kern (de fundering) en vervolgens met nieuwe materialen een heropbouw plaatsvindt. Een bijzonder aspect voor Akpokiere was de ontdekking hoe een illusie van kleur kon worden gecre&euml;erd door verschillende garens te combineren. Voor dit project werd een mix van synthetische en natuurlijke garens geselecteerd. In sommige delen werd textuur toegevoegd met historische weeftechnieken van de voormalige Textielschool in Tilburg, waardoor het pak van de dirigent een interessant patroon kreeg en de walmende uitlaatgassen extra nadruk kregen.</body></html>
